I don’t
remember hearing a lot about androstenedione (andro) until August of last
year when Mark McGwire was scrutinized during for taking the supplement
during his run to the major league home run record. However I don’t
think it was because of ignorance that I had not heard much about the supplement,
but merely that it has not been under a great deal of study until recently.
The argument that comes with andro is not whether or not is a steroid,
but whether it is an anabolic steroid.
Many other countries
though have classified andro as an anabolic steroid making it illegal in
many other parts of the world. If the U.S. does classify andro as
an anabolic steroid it will automatically be restricted by the Anabolic
Steroids Control Act of 1990. One of the main dangers with supplements
like andro is that they have nobody looking over their shoulders right
now. The FDA does not regulate over –the-counter steroids because
they do not claim to treat, cure, mitigate, diagnose, or prevent a disease.
The debate is
on, but it will be a while before any definite conclusions can be made.
It took the publicity of a star like Mark McGwire to get the ball rolling
on research that will help us to learn more about andro.
