Novell Network Login (Windows 98)
Password Expiration
Introduction
Every 40 days, your password will expire. You need to select a new password
at that time. This process strengthens the security of the network system.
Note: most PCs on campus run the Windows 98 operating system.
Instructions will differ if you are logging in to a Windows 3.1 or Windows
95 PC.
Note: this username and password is separate from those needed
to access your electronic mail account (e.g. CC:Mail
select
the Changing Your Password link)
Procedure
-
Type in your username and initial password as usual
-
The screen should now show:
The window above states, ' WSC_TREE LOGIN xxxxx. The password for user
xxx has expired. You have 5 grace logins left to change your password.
Do you want to change your password?'
-
Aside: the network login procedure has been programmed to require you to
change your password every 40 days. It is important that you change your
password before the end of your 5 grace logins; otherwise you could be
locked out of your account. Be sure to choose a password that is:
-
at least 5 characters long
-
a combination of letters and numbers (this is the most secure way)
-
not easily guessed by others
-
not shared with others (remember, you are responsible for this account)
-
Suggestion: combine parts of things you can easily remember but would be
hard for someone else to guess
-
Note: if you choose an easily guessable password, you become the weak link
in overall campus network security, which affects everyone. Please consider
the needs of others.
-
Position the mouse cursor over the Yes button; click the left mouse
key.
-
The screen will now show:
-
Type your carefully-chosen new password where indicated
-
Retype the new password where indicated
-
Position the mouse cursor over the OK button; click the left mouse
key.
-
If you typed the same new password twice, you will be successful in changing
the password
-
A Change Windows Password window will now appear in the top left
corner of the screen:
-
Without typing any new passwords, position the mouse cursor over the upper
left OK button; click the left mouse key.
-
The screen will now show that you were successful in changing the password:
-
Position the mouse cursor over the OK button; click the left mouse
key.
-
At this point, it will take around 30 seconds for the login procedure to
complete itself. Once finished you will see a screen with desktop icons;
you are ready to start work
-
Note: when logging in, always be sure to allow the network sufficient time
to finalise settings.
-
Note: if you exceed the number of grace logins, you will be locked out
of your account. If that happens, please contact Network Services (375.7286
or email dlinster@wscgate.wsc.edu ) to regain access.
-
If you have questions about logging in, please contact Jon Kendall at The
CITE (375.7090 or jkendall@wscgate.wsc.edu ).
