1. With respect to what you know about American history and the
conditions in the South during the 1950s, what
characteristics were present in Montgomery,
Alabama with regard to racism?
2. How did these characteristics influence attitudes about racism?

4. Fear is a motivator. What does this statement mean in reference to this movie?

1. What experiences of the students made them reluctant to show much respect for each other?
2. Why did the students have no faith in school?
3. What characteristics of Jaime Escalante make him an effective teacher?
4. What attitudes of other people had to be overcome by these students
in order for the students to be considered successful
academically?
5. Why did these students have the right to feel that they were the victims of institutional discrimination?
6. What implications for your own teaching can you absorb from this movie?
