Explorers Club Fall 2008 Trip Itinerary
All times approximate, and also subject to change just for fun.

Friday, September 19

  7:00 am – Departure by school vans.  (Vans will be brought to Lot #10 where students with permits may park their cars.)

  9:00 am – Bathroom break at a Grand Island truck stop prior to getting on I-80.

11:00 pm – Visit the Golden Spike Tower at the Bailey reclassification yards, North Platte (308-532-9920)
                  Directions: Exit 177 off I-80, go north on Dewey, then take the following streets: Jeffers, 4th, Mills, Front.

      Noon – Lunch in North Platte at a very fast food restaurant (student’s choice).

  2:30 pm – Stretch our legs at a site TBD in Ft. Morgan or Wiggins (turn your watch back an hour).

  3:00 pm – Depart Ft. Morgan or Wiggins.

  6:00 pm – Arrive at the Super 8 Motel in Estes Park (970-586-5338) at1040 Big Thompson Hwy 34.  Dinner on your own or in groups.  Motel has outdoor pool.

Saturday, September 20

  7:00 am – Our motel features a free continental breakfast starting @ 7:00.

  7:30 am – Depart motel and enter Rocky Mountain National Park. (free continental breakfast in motel starts @ 7:00).

  8:15 am – Arrive at subalpine Bear Lake; short hike on interpretive nature trail.  Possible photo stop at Sprague Lake.

10:00 am – (optional) Brief stop at Moraine Park Museum (open 9:00-4:30) to view natural history exhibits.

10:30 am – Beaver Meadows visitor center (open 8:00-5:00, view 20-minute film shown on the hour and half-hour).

11:30 pm – Begin ascent into the Park on Trail Ridge Road (we will make several stops at turnouts for photographs).

  1:30 pm – Arrive at the Alpine Visitor Center (open 10:30-4:30).  Cafeteria, souvenirs, hiking in the alpine tundra.

  4:30 pm – (time approximate) Begin descent back to Estes Park.

  6:00 pm – Arrive back at our motel in Estes Park.  Dinner on your own Saturday evening.

Sunday, September 21

  7:00 am – Our motel features a free continental breakfast starting @ 7:00.

  7:30 am – Depart motel.  

      Noon – Lunch in western Nebraska at very fast food restaurant (student’s choice).  Probably Ogallala or North Platte.

  2:00 pm – Depart restaurant after one-hour lunch. (don’t forget to turn your watch ahead an hour)

  8:00 pm – Arrive back at WSC campus Lot #10.
