Course Description:
A course designed to provide the student with the skills and technical knowledge required for desktop publishing, multimedia presentations, World Wide Web Page production and incorporating Internet sources into presentations. Includes a variety of software and hardware to produce graphics, text documents, and page formatting programs. New techniques are updated to match the requirements within the field.  Meets the computer requirement for all HHPS majors.
Textbook:
No text is required, however the bookstore does have some helpful texts that can assist if you have difficulty with a particular program.
Required Supplies: Course Objectives:
  1. Students will become proficient at working within the Windows environment.
  2. Students will demonstrate an understanding using a spreadsheet as a database, for statistical analysis and for generating graphs and equations.
  3. Demonstrate fundamental knowledge of personal computers and how they work.
  4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of basic desktop publishing. This includes flyers, brochures, and newsletters.
  5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of a commonly used multimedia presentation program. Includes importing graphics, sounds and movies.
  6. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the World Wide Web, accessing information, downloading files and software, and writing basic HTML programs.

Exams (1-2 exams to be given, including final - may be in project format) 10%
Assignments and Quizzes
  • Daily assignments and/or quizzes demonstrating competency in applications discussed.  No late or make up points allowed - must be in class to receive points and turn in assignments, if not, assume you received a zero.
  • 90%
    Grading Scale:

    A = 94-100 A- = 90-93 B+ = 87-89 B = 84-86

    B- = 80-83 C+ = 77-79 C = 74-76 C- = 70-73

    D+ = 67-69 D = 64-66 D- = 60-63 F = <60

    Topics to be covered include the following:

    Introduction to the Windows Environment
    • File Manager, WSC discussion boards, saving files, directories, copying, formatting, etc...
    Word Processing
    • Creating and using projects in Microsoft Word.
    Using a Spreadsheet 
    • Microsoft Excel – Create spreadsheets that will help you manage data, perform calculations, possibly due some statistics, etc.…
    • Microsoft Access
    Desktop Publishing
    • Microsoft Publisher - Create flyers on some field related topic, or hypothetical business. Use pictures and color!
    Multimedia Presentations
    • Create a Power Point presentation about some field related topic (Applied Human and Sport Physiology, Exercise Science, Physical Education, Sport Management) or something related to your hypothetical business. The presentation will be graded on content and quality (use pictures, excellent transitions, build effects, movies, etc...).
    Working on the Internet
    • Create a home page for the Internet. The page must have links to other sites, images, backgrounds, and some neat icons when applicable. Be certain that you save everything to the same folder!
    Project selected by instructor displaying newly acquired skills
    Note
    Students Enrolled in PED 587 will also be required to do an additional project(s).  These students should consult with me with regard to their topic.  In addition, you may be asked to provide lectures/presentations.
