Textbook used for this course

Course Description:
A study of human athletic performance physiology applicable to coaching.  Physiological concepts related to sports performance including training methods, bioenergetics, ergogenics, and nutrition for athletes will be examined.  For students taking a minor or endorsement in coaching.
Course Rationale:
The initial study of sport physiology requires that the student have prior competency in basic human anatomy and physiology (PED 105).  Emphasis in this course focuses on how the body (and its systems) responds to exercise training and how coaches can use this knowledge to effectively enhance athletic performance.
Textbook:
Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Second Edition. (ISBN: 0736000844) Wilmore and Costill. Human Kinetics pub. 1999.
Course Objectives:
  1. To provide an understanding of the acute and chronic physiological changes that occur in the body in response to exercise training.
  2. To provide an understanding of how the body produces energy to fuel athletic performance.
  3. To provide an understanding of the physiological responses that take place within the cardiorespiratory system during exercise and as a result of chronic training.
  4. To provide an understanding of training specificity and its application to successful sports performance.
  5. To provide knowledge of sports training concepts such as periodization, overtraining, and the use of ergogenic aids.
Evaluation:                                                                                          Percentage of overall grade:
Exams (3-5 exams to be given, including final) 35%
Quizzes (numerous quizzes, must be present or receive a zero) 20%
Laboratory activities and write-ups 35%
Presentations 10%
