Course Description:
Fundamental skills in the use of free weights and weight machines and the techniques for developing strength and fitness will be provided for majors.

Course Objectives:

  1. To provide the student with an understanding and appreciation of the need to develop and maintain a lifetime physical fitness program which includes muscular strength and endurance as well as cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, body composition management, and stress management.
  2. To expose the student to proper lifting, breathing, and spotting techniques associated with a variety of standard weight training exercises.
  3. To provide the student with the knowledge to develop a comprehensive weight training program that will successfully meet one's needs and goals.
  4. To provide the student with an understanding of the value of setting challenging yet realistic strength and/or endurance training goals and logging program progress.
  5. To provide the student with an understanding of special methods and programs such as periodization training, straight set, super (push-pull) set, compound (giant) set, pyramid, plyometrics, rest and recovery, and circuit training.
  6. To provide the student with the knowledge to monitor and adjust weight training programs as needed using the above techniques to optimize improvements in muscular strength and endurance and add variety to training routines.
Evaluation: Percentage of Grade
   Attendance and class participation 45%
  Written log and program modification 40%
