Course Description:
An introduction to the disciplines within Sports Medicine, including the historical background, terminology, technology, professional associations, and career opportunities.
Course Goals/Objectives:
  1. To introduce the student to the disciplines within the field of Sports Medicine.
  2. To explore historical developments within this area.
  3. To expose students to common terminology and technology within the field of Sports Medicine.
  4. To explore and introduce students to the various career opportunities and certifications available in Sports Medicine.
  5. Students will also demonstrate knowledge of the requirements necessary for their intended degree program at Wayne State College, as well as graduate programs they may be interested in.

  • There will be numerous in class activities and homework assignments that will count for points. If you miss class, you miss the points. If you know you will miss class, see me so that we can try to work out a solution.

     Exams/Quizzes...................................................................................................
  • There will be 1-3 exams given throughout the semester, including the final.  These exams will consist of information presented in lecture, labs, and class presentations.  The exams may consist of a variety of questions including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, essay, or case scenarios.
  • Quizzes may be given any day.
  • If you miss an exam or quiz, assume you received a zero.

     Job Shadowing Project and Paper..................................................................
  • You are required to complete a minimum of 12 hours of job shadowing a professional within the field/career that you are interested in pursuing.  After completing this project you are also required to prepare a typed paper describing your experience.  A brief presentation will also be presented to the class.

     Attendance and Class Participation................................................................
  • Students are strongly encouraged to attend each scheduled class since some course related content and experiences are best attained in the classroom setting.  Failure to attend class may adversely affect the learning process and subsequent performance.  Attendance is expected!  Please notify the instructor in advance if you know that you are going to miss a class so that we can work out a solution.  Students are responsible for obtaining the information that they missed due to an absence.
  • If a student is absent during a day that we are not in the classroom (i.e. field trip, tour, lab, etc.) they will automatically lose 2% towards this part of their overall grade.

  A = 94-100 A- = 90-93 B+ = 87-89 B = 84-86
  B- = 80-83 C+ = 77-79 C = 74-76 C- = 70-73
  D+ = 67-69 D = 64-66 D- = 60-63 F = 59-below
