Skill Related Components of Physical Fitness
Chapter 10

OBJECTIVES:

CHAPTER OUTLINE:
SKILL-RELATED FITNESS
A.  Skill-related fitness is important for successful motor performance in athletic events and in lifetime sports and activities.
1. Activities can include:
a.  Basketball
b. Racquetball
c. Golf
d. Hiking
e. Soccer
f. Water-skiing
2. Good skill-related fitness also enhances overall quality of life by helping people cope more effectively in emergency situations.
B. The skill-related components include:
1. Agility
2. Balance
3. Coordination
4. Power and speed
5. Reaction time
C. As with the health-related fitness components, the principle of specificity of training applies to skill-related components.
1. To develop a certain task or skill, the individual almost practice that same task many times.
2. There seems to be very little crossover learning effect.
D. The rate of learning in skill-related fitness varies from person to person.
1. These components seem to be determined to a large extent by genetics.
2. Individuals with good skill-related fitness tend to do better and learn faster when performing a wide variety of skills.
3. Skill-related fitness can be enhanced with practice.
4. To develop a given component, the training program must be specific to the type of development the individual is trying to achieve.
SKILL-RELATED FITNESS BENEFITS
A. Benefits of skill-related fitness include:
1. Good reaction time, balance, coordination, and agility can help your avoid a fall and thereby minimize injury.
2. The ability to generate maximum force in a short time (power) may be crucial to preserve life in a life-threatening situation.
3. Maintaining speed can be especially important for elderly people who may need to cross an intersection safely.
PERFORMANCE TESTS FOR SKILL-RELATED FITNESS
A. Several performance tests have been developed over the years to assess the various components of skill-related fitness.
1. Agility Test
2. Balance Test
3. Coordination Test
4. Power Test
5. Reaction Time Test
6. Speed Test
B. Results of the performance tests are expressed in percentile ranks.
