COURSE OBJECTIVES

The goal of this course is to provide graduate students in Exercise Physiology the opportunity to investigate applications of exercise testing, prescription, tolerance and benefits for people with a variety of clinical co-morbidities as well as for the normal aging adult. Students will read and discuss current literature and present seminars related to the objectives. Seminar slides and relevant links will be posted on this website . Students will develop a resource portfolio for future reference. We will schedule several on-site observations coordinated with Mercy Hospital in Sioux City and the Wayne State College Adult Fitness program.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

I. STUDENT SEMINARS: Students will be required to present two seminars during the semester. The first will be related to some clinical morbidity. The second can be another clinical situation or be related to exercise physiology and aging. In addition to a Power Point presentation, that will be edited for posting on this web site, students will provide a resource packet of materials to give to each student in the class. This packet will include:

                            1. Seminar Abstract
                            2. Pathophysiology
                            3. Epidemiology
                            4. Related Pharmacology
                            5. Exercise Testing: Contraindications, precautions, modifications, limitations
                            6. Benefits and Risks of Exercise
                            7. Sample Exercise Prescription
                            8. Resources: Organizations, support groups, web sites, additional literature

II. CLINICAL AND ADULT FITNESS OBSERVATIONS: Observations with Mercy Hospital, Sioux City - Cardiac Rehab and Diagnostic Cardiology will be arranged. You will spend another 5 hours observing Adult Fitness at either WSC or other facility. You will write an observation analysis of your experiences.

III. PORTFOLIO: You will be required to maintain a portfolio with materials, notes and journal articles obtained during the semester. This portfolio will be an important resource for you as you continue your professional development in Exercise Physiology or Clinical Exercise Physiology.
